You have a very poor strawman argument here. Cutters have a mental illness to begin with. People who take drugs do so because they want to get high. You can't compare the two. It's pretty insulting.

Many, many people who take drugs do so for exactly the same reasons cutters cut: as a way of coping with a mental illness, or with abuse or other trauma.

Quite a few people addicted to drugs are already mentally ill to begin with, and the drug use sure as hell does not make them any better (in most cases)....

So your argument is so not valid, and that coming from someone whom do not like drugs at all,,,

I think the difference for most people is the fact that addiction is seen as a choice, because the first 'hit' is seen as a voluntary action, without the obvious compulsion to start.

Personally, I think that since we know that there are people who become alcoholic and others who don't despite drinking the same amount of alcohol, that means that yes, people who have an addiction and struggle with it have a mental illness and deserve support, not judgement.

As much as I agree people with addictions needs and deserves as much support as people with mental illness, that doesn't change they took bad decisions and they're responsible for those decisions.

If they were already mentally ill when they made the choice to take drugs, are they still fully responsible for the consequences? Why is taking drugs as a consequence of mental illness a reprehensible act, while cutting as a consequence of mental illness is something that a person is not responsible for? I don't understand how you are drawing this line.

Frankly, this whole "you're not responsible for your actions if you have mental illness" argument pisses me off as someone who has a diagnosed mental illness and has dealt with it for more than two decades.

My mental illness does not MAKE me do anything. It gives me compulsions, yes, but it is ultimately my choice whether or not I choose to give into them. If I do give in, then yes, I am responsible for the consequences. Can it be difficult to resist them? Hell yes. But it's not impossible, and it's not like my OCD takes over my body and forces it to do anything. In the end, it is always my choice.

If a person with mental illness can literally not control their actions we have moved so far beyond the point about whether or not their addiction is "their responsibility" or not.

If they literally can't control their actions then they need to be evaluated to see if they a danger to themselves or others. In fact, if someone is literally incapable of controlling their actions they may need to be institutionalized for their own safety.

Depends on the mental illness.

My clinically depressed Dad is responsible for his actions - be they drinking too much or smacking me and my brothers.

His depression does not excuse him from EITHER action.

*nodnod* I agree with this, as someone who both has depression, AND has heard it as an excuse for someone else treating me badly (it was a relatively small, one-time situation, but it irked me).

I can't speak for other illnesses though. Depression does NOT create compulsions. If it does, you are no longer dealing with (only) depression; you're dealing with something else.

And I don't know what it's like to have compulsions, so I will reserve judgment.
