It was a reaction to the MZB thing where a fanficcer managed to successfully contest copyright and gain a part of MZB's IP for themself because MZB was a bit soft on upholding her rights wrt fanwork. ML's editor and publisher didn't want her next on the list for something like that so they convinced her to go all guns blazing on anything that looked like fanworks.
