Yeah, I've no doubt that was an influence as MZB's was one of the fandoms she wrote fic in. However, the Fanlore article on the topic makes it clear how much the MZB debacle was just hot air. (MZB was also a former fanfic writer, go figure.)

I have read the fanlore article for it! Ages ago tho. But thanks.

It seems a lot of all the inaccuracies stemmed from the internet and wires crossing (like how a lot of misunderstandings and problems happen on the net). It seemed to be a small situation that the internet made into a big one.

Didn't help that at one point inveterate spammer Mikela Ecks/Laura Hale was plastering an inaccurate version of the MZB thing all over the internet as a cautionary tale - seriously, I remember her randomly showing up on blog posts with it in ~2006. o_0 No idea why she did that. I'm honestly not sure if it was the internet that made a big deal of it, or just MZB herself with that later bizarre assist from Mikela Ecks.

At any rate, I find Lackey's whole stance both hypocritical and creepy; apart from the general ickiness of having a fanfic space where one is only supposed to participate for pay, that kind of IP control attempt conveniently puts her in a position to neuter the critical role of fanfic. I feel like fanfic being a peer space is important, and it has all kinds of implications for how fanfic writers communicate with each other, from exchanging kink prompts to ripping on canon in comment threads. So the thought of what Lackey wanted from fandom makes me feel kinda ill.
