Not to sound incredibly dense, but since this is only the 2nd apartment I've ever rented, what is subleasing? It sounds like it might be vaguely illegal?

It depends on your lease actually, but it's basically where, if you aren't going to be living there the entire length of the lease, you find someone else to live there and pay rent. The specifics might change, but that's the basic concept [and some places actually require you to do it.]
