I'd lay odds he didn't fully contemplate the effect things would have on him after "drying up"

Some of the worst addicts of a certain type deliberately "dry up" sometimes even by going to rehab for a while just so they can afford the habit when they are using.

This is late, so who knows if you'll see this.

I know that addicts can do that. But Cory (as far as I know), had only been to rehab before at 19. That doesn't fit his history.

However, he might not have known how horrible the withdrawl would be and need of having drugs back in his system. Or he may have recalled it, but thought he had more strength to fight against the need of using. We'll never know.
