Re: Shows with terrible first seasons

LOL yes. But I think that season 2 had a few really great episodes (like Measure of a Man, which is one of the best episodes in the whole franchise IMO) and the isolated good scenes, ideas, and plotlines tended to be better and more numerous than the isolated good bits of season 1.

Hah! The Naked Now is totally worse than The Last Outpost. The Last Outpost would be a middling-good if weirdly TOS-y story if the Ferengi weren't so ridiculous and unconvincing, whereas the only redeeming element of The Naked Now is probably Tasha and Data's fling...and even that was better for the impact of its existence than its execution. :P

But I could totally argue about what the worst episode of TNG season 1 was all day...

The Ferengi were so unconvincing - I always thought it took Armin Shimerman to really bring them to their full potential. And Riker was so pompously pompous in the ep.

But yes, you are right, The Naked Now is worse. Especially since The Naked Time was such a great TOS episode, and the Now version was so so so embarrassingly bad. I kind of wiped that episode out of my brain and forgot about it. :)

Armin Shimerman was God :) The Ferengi were mainly pretty blah in TNG, mostly because TNG was very focused on military/exploratory stuff, and therefore in that show they didn't get a chance to show much of the interesting aspects of their culture. Whereas DS9's setting had lots of business and shady characters and coming and going and allowed them to be more Quark-ish in general and develop those qualities more.
