I watched the other films before The Avengers except for the Hulk and was as underwhelmed as the OP. And Bruce was one of my favorites in The Avengers, actually! Him and Tony.

The writing did seem a bit too "this is cool we're cool COME ON LIKE THIS", though. Like, they were going through the motions of what a "cool movie" is supposed to seem like, or something? I don't know how to explain it. The way fandom talked it up I was expecting something... better than just slightly above average, I guess.

It was only saved from being utterly obnoxious by having such fantastic actors. I try to imagine less capable actors following the script and saying those "witty" one-liners and banter and I cringe.

I suspect that you and I have very different opinions of what constitutes good dialogue and good movies (and many other things, as Bruce actually kind of annoyed me in Avengers), because I didn't think that Avengers was try-hard or had air-quotes "witty" dialogue. You probably just want different things out of a movie than Avengers fans do, which doesn't mean that either Avengers or whatever movies you like are bad; it's just a matter of tastes.

That's pretty much exactly how I felt. Every big action scene just looked like "hey look how cool and epic these guys are (oh right and there's a girl)" and it felt so hollow. The villain was hardly a threat during the whole film, and then it was basically just disaster porn New York style with a few funny quips here and there.

I guess it was fun for people who already liked all these characters, and seeing them come together and everything.
