I can relate, Anon. I saw how small my current fandom was when I first saw it and set out to be a BNF. I knew I could rock the joint, so that's what I aimed to do.
I did reach my "goal" and become one of the first woman BNFs in the fandom, but I also legitimately love this fandom and all the friends I've made.
So while people are going "IF YOU SET OUT TO BE A BNF FIRST YOU CAN'T HAVE FUN", you can set out to be a BNF first AND have fun AND make fandom a better place.
You don't have to be an expert on the fandom before you decide you want to make a difference.

Same. I had an interest in my fandom prior to joining, but a big motivator for me was just to see if I could do it... join, rock the fanfiction and have people enjoy what I wrote. I'm sure people would say that this is being a bad fan and it's impossible to enjoy it, but they'd be wrong on both counts. It was a blast, and I'd do it all over again in a heartbeat.
