Let's talk Teen Wolf!

(Anonymous) 2013-07-25 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
It's been brought to my attention that apparently there are people who think Derek must have been sexually abused by Kate because clearly he had to be a high school student and she was older than him when they had sex (and she used him to murder his family).

Am I the only one who thought Derek's season one "we were away at school (when the fire happened) meant Derek and Laura were away at college? *Maybe* boarding school, but my money's been on him being a freshman or sophomore in college, which would have made him between 18 and 20 when the fire happened, between 24 and 26 in season one (so, still pretty close to those ages now).

I mean, the fire happened at NIGHT.

I mean, there's definitely room to say she used sex to manipulate him and was, in fact, an awful person, but I feel kind of like people are trying to infantilize him a little bit.

YANA I've always assumed they were away at college. I had no idea people assumed high school (which makes NO sense) until I started reading fic after this season started. I like that canon is addressing this. That Cora is alive and Derek had no idea is one of the more recent indicators that he and Laura were nowhere near Beacon Hills when it happened.

I was also a little thrown when people took Stiles' line about the fire being about ten years ago as the be-all, end-all of when it happened. The season one finale specifically stated it was six years previous on two occasions. That makes it happened about seven years from the current events in canon; season one and season two took place during the same school year, the break between seasons two and three was their summer vacation, and season three takes place less than one full calendar year from the start of season one (about 9 months).

Yeah, I blame the ten years line on it being the pilot. Every other reference to the fire says it was six years ago.

I don't know that I think they were in college, but definitely older than previously thought based on the flashback episode. A lot of what fandom assumed (like that Kate was Derek's first girlfriend) is Jossed after that ep.

Personally, it was her "this one grew up in all the right places".
