I'm a bad person

(Anonymous) 2013-07-25 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
I just wanted to confess this since I can't stand to say this out loud. Sometimes when I'm angry and my dog is bothering me at the same time, I hit her. And sometimes when I raise my hand for other reasons--grabbing a dish or picking up something--she flinches, and I feel like shit, and it makes me hate myself. I'm not going to do this anymore because I love my dog way too much for me to even pretend this is okay behavior, and I'm not really mad at her anyway, no matter how annoying her whining can be. I understand if I get hate for posting this. I totally deserve it. What the fuck is wrong with me...

It's definitely a shitty thing that you've done, but you acknowledge that it's wrong and you're working on not doing it anymore.

Well, he good news is: if you feel shitty you're probably not a sociopath.

You should probably still get help for your anger issues, though.

I did that when I was younger, (although part of the anger was born from the dog never listening to anyone. then it turned out that its parents were cousins [and maybe more dogs in its family tree were related too?] and apparently it had left him with issues?? but still! I shouldn't have done that). I still regret it infinitely. :(

sa

and then when I confessed to my brother he was all "if no blood comes out it's okay, don't worry"

I didn't realize how fucked up that was until years later D:

It's good that you're not going to do this any more.

You should probably go talk to a therapist.

Yikes... but you can't change the past; just don't do it anymore, and I agree you should get help for your anger if possible. Get self helps books about it if nothing else.

I hope you're honest that you will not be doing this any more, and I urge you to get counselling for your anger issues (or you probably will do it again).

I adopted a dog who was abused and flinched at the beginning when we just raised our hand to pet her or told her no. Finally after months of giving her love and affection, she doesn't flinch anymore. Hearing that you hit your dog makes me sad and rage at the same time, knowing how it affected my dog and others.

Having said that, it's good that you've realised what you're doing is wrong and you're a massive asshole for doing it. Please seek help for your anger issues and possibly counseling or therapy. You're dog doesn't deserve your cruel attacks.

You should stop that.

I know when I was really stressed I used to yell at my pets and throw things in their direction. I got myself to stop though and now when particularly angry I troll irrationally around in areas I know people won't take me seriously.

The dog won't understand. Maybe next time instead of scaring the dog, sit down and call her over. Force yourself to be calm and just pat her.

I'm really glad you posted this here and I'm really glad you have decided to stop hitting your dog. Please stick to that, and please get help for your anger if you can. It will get better.

Yes you are. People who do this shit shouldn't have pets. She's trying to make you feel better because she loves with the unconditional love of a dog. And unlike a child who grow up and away and eventually heal, she's stuck with you.

Get help for your anger issues. Stop abusing your dog. Maybe if you work really really hard she'll stop flinching every time you lift your arm.
