I think the problem lies in the fact that on TVD, if a new character is black, a majority of the audience doesn't even bother to get invested anymore, because they have a propensity for dying...quickly.

This. 'Black Guy Dies First' is a meme/trope for a reason. It's one thing for bad shit to happen to characters, it's another for it to happen disproportionately to certain kinds of characters, especially when that pattern is repeated not just in the show under discussion but throughout media as a whole.
