I like Snape well enough for being an interesting character (plus great sarcastic humor), but as far as being a "good person," everything you said is true.
And as far as James and Snape during their school years. I don't at all understand how being a prankster makes someone worse than being a proto-death eater. Earth logic would dictate it being the other way around.
Snape might be a more complex character (he's in it more), but James Potter is definitely the better man.
If Snape had acted differently during Harry's years at school, the argument for him would be stronger. However, he treated Harry AND his friends (especially poor Neville!) dreadfully. That's not really honoring Lily's memory very well.
