I don't entirely agree. One of the main themes was also friendship - and when Sora went to talk about his friends, nine times out of ten he was gesturing at Donald and Goofy. Donald and Goofy were there for Sora pretty much the entire trip. Both of them were a major part of the games. I could maybe understand if in AU Destiny-Islands-only settings you wouldn't want them there, but most of KH fandom doesn't do that. The fandom seems to be heavily biased against their inclusion mainly because they're anthropomorphic, and that's... a little wrong, given that characters like Organization XIII and Roxas are technically also not human. It would be really interesting to see human!Donald and human!Goofy in AU fic, actually, now that I'm thinking about it - to bring their personalities to present in the way that you might see... oh... Demyx or Roxas, for example.
