Troll

(Anonymous) 2013-07-25 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Doesn't mean someone who says something you disagree with.

Even if you really double plus find what they're saying deeply offensive.

Jesus fucking christ, this isn't difficult internet.

Yeah,I've seen it used before when i though - well that could be a genuine opinion.

"Just because they disagree with you, doesn't necessarily make that person a troll" is true enough.

But when someone truly believes that God Hates Fags, then goes to some random forum and starts spreading homophobic shit everywhere and spamming everyone with it, they are a troll. They are out to deliberately provoke a reaction and in that instance it doesn't matter whether they believe in what they're saying or not, the main point is to get people riled up. Trolling is about behavior and actions as much as beliefs.

I don't think they're talking about that so much as the occasional politically unpopular secret we'll get from time to time where the comments preemptively declare it a troll secret. And whether the thread eventually devolves into bitter wank or not at this point doesn't matter because no discussion has started yet. Just BAM! "TROLL SECRET".

And I have to agree with the original anon on this because, yes, while some of them may indeed be trolls, it doesn't help to assume that everyone in a certain section of fandom has the exact same opinions as you and anyone who claims otherwise is just a lying liar that lies. Because hey, those people do exist and getting labelled as a "troll" right out the door isn't going to do anything to help sway their opinions.

Not disagreeing with that. I was pointing out that truly believing in what you say doesn't necessarily mean you're NOT a troll or trolling.

Gotcha. Wasn't sure since I know some people see no difference between "calming stating a conservative opinion in a fandom zone" and "spamming and trying shove radical conservative opinions down everyone's throats."

You've told us what a troll isn't. So, how do you describe one?

It's not the opinion. It's how and where it is presented. Some things are said to piss people off and most times people can tell when you're just trying to be a douche.

Is calling someone a troll overused in my opinion? Sure. But do I care? Not really, no. It doesn't hurt anything much.

Exactly, trolls rarely have anything to do with actual opinions, and most of the time are just riling people up for shits and giggles.

Pretty much. The opinion is just the vehicle to get to pissed-off-people-ville of shits and giggles.

Meh. Half of the time, I don't even feel inclined to give them the benefit of doubt. So what if they're not trolling? Am I disrespecting them for saying they are? Why the fuck would I care?
