I said it downthread, but the birds didn't bother me so much because they were a moment of anger, and she'd been working on making birds appear at the time.

But deliberately dating a guy she hated to make Ron jealous? Was creepy and gross.

Hexing a guy during tryouts to give her friend a better shot? A) Cheating. B) Doesn't trust Ron to do well on his own. C) Doesn't trust Harry to be a good team captain.

Tricking a bunch of kids into signing a blank contract, which then turns out to scar a girl's face for life?

Evil.

Ugh. Even when I was a kid, that scene always left a bad taste in my mouth. I don't like her scaring the one girl's face either, but at least that has a springing board from which one can attempt to justify it re: Umbridge.

But the quidditch scene? It's fucking quidditch! An intermural sport! There are literally no horrible consequences for not making the team other than maybe feeling a bit rubbish about yourself. And like you said, it reeks of a lack of faith in both the physical abilities of her friends and their ability to handle disappointment/hold control over their own lives.
