In the upper part of the shower is usually a towel/rag rack. We've always had them. then the soap dish with handle. That is thick enough to wrap your hand around comfortably if need be.

Seriously, it's there for people who are taking a bath to hang their washcloths, so they don't have to stand up to get it. Are you using the little square washcloths or are you using bigger handtowels as washcloths?

Nope, still not a handle or meant to hold a grown person's weight. Doesn't matter what it's made of because it's probably still just glued to the wall or put in with flimsy screws. Definitely NOT a hand hold.
