Damn girl, you're hardcore. I love me some potions.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-28 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
that's not that weird, i've never used potions either not because i consider it cheating but cause its not that hard to go without in-game. also you lose your turn basically and you could've won in that time or the opponent kills you with a one hit KO move

(Anonymous) 2013-07-28 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
You are as sane as I am!

Seriously though - I feel its cheating if I just start using potions or berries. Then I feel guilty when leveling up my team when one gets taken out because I don't use potions.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-28 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
This secret isn't showing up for me even when I click the link.

Must be the image host.

Can you see it now?

I try to minimalize potion use but only because they're expensive. It's because I spend the majority of my money on either TMs, or Super Repels.

This is totally me. I was always too poor to buy potions. How many pokéballs can I buy with my money? ALL OF THEM.

[Picture is official art of the male player character and the female player character of the videogames Pokémon Black and Pokémon White. The male character is a teenager with slightly spiky medium-length brown hair and brown eyes, wearing a blue jacket, dark gray pants, red sports shoes, a black and blue messenger back and a red, black and white baseball cap. The female character is a teenager with blue eyes and long brown hair pulled up in a fluffy high ponytail, with two locks of hair hanging from the sides of her head. She is wearing a white shirt, a small black vest, short blue shorts, black ankle-high boots, black wristbands, a light red or pink messenger bag and a white and light red or pink baseball cap.]

I don't use potions during battles with other trainers, even in-game ones, like it's "cheating" if I do. This includes berries but most stat-boosting items are okay. I even do this with gym leaders who use hyper potions.

Secret because: Oh my god, I'm insane!

Um, good for you?

Well I hate using items in videogames (I'm more of a hoarder I guess) so I never use potions either. It's easy with a few levels ahead. You're definitely not alone :)

(Anonymous) 2013-07-28 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I do this too, but it's like part hoarder and part "I picked that shit off the grass and I'm not paying to replace it." I also hate it when my pokemon are KO'd, so I reset and make sure it never happens. This is much more annoying than no items but I can't stand knowing the -1 affection happened. for me it's not pokemon unless I make it AS TEDIOUS AS POSSIBLE, I guess. :l

I don't use potions either and for the same reason, this does mean that I swear at the Gym leaders for being 'cheating bastards' whenever they use a potion though. :P

(Anonymous) 2013-07-28 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think Pokémon fans would find this odd at all especially those who have been with the series for such a long time. I enjoy setting up rules and limitations for myself before a play-through (types I'm allowed to catch, what items I can/can't use, etc). Also consider how many people do Nuzlocke runs. :)

well damn

major props to you

(Anonymous) 2013-07-28 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
The only time I ever use potions is with the hyper-potion-spamming elite four, but even then I cringe every time. It's so much more satisfying, and it does feel like cheating against normal trainers.

I can appreciate this stance, OP. I'm pretty good at moneygrinding in Pokemon so I tend to use items freely, but in other games my item use is pretty sparse due to conservation of funds. It does add an interesting challenge to the game. Might have to try applying that to Pokemon and see if it works out for me...

(Anonymous) 2013-07-28 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't use potions very much, myself. Either I forget they exist, or I'm out, or I don't think it's worth spending a round in battle if I think I can just switch or KO the opponent first.

This tends to bite me in Nuzlocke runs.

Wait... this isn't normal behavior? I do this with almost every video game. Shit, even in Kingdom Hearts I fought Riku 99 times to get 99 potions and then never used a single one.

I wasn't aware people used potions. You just have to be a few levels above whoever you're fighting and you pretty much don't need them. At least you don't in Pokémon.

Why berries? Potions aren't allowed in the Battle Frontier (and equivalents), but berries are part of the 'strategy' and all that.

My brother just actually admitted that he's the same way to me a couple of weeks ago. I laughed really hard.

But I have a friend who only ever catches pokémon in REGULAR pokéballs, so I'd say potions are nothing compared to that.

I used to feel like it was cheating too, but I can't stand the thought of LOSING, so...

I limit myself so that I can only use items if my opponent uses one first, and then I can only use the kind they use. I never use revives in-battle. I always feel like it's unfair to my opponent to use more items than them. XD

LOL fuck that.

If you're stuck in a cave and you have no repels and all your Pokemon is at dangerous lows on health...you gotta use some potions so you don't white out and forced to start over!

You are far more hardcore than I am.

Also, have you considered doing a Nuzlocke? It's a challenge as well - different (the two main rules are that any Pokemon that faints is considered 'dead' and either has to be permanently boxed or released, and that you MUST catch the first Pokemon you encounter in that route and no others), but bloody hard. (I tried once, got one of my Pokemon knocked out three routes in, and immediately decided I wasn't doing a Nuzlocke any more.)
