Question

(Anonymous) 2013-07-28 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
If someone were to write a science fiction story about clones of historical figures, would that count as RPF?

Re: Question

(Anonymous) 2013-07-28 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
My guess would be no, because fiction about actual historical figures counts as historical fiction, not RPF. Clones of modern celebrities would probably be RPF, because you have to make the celebrity exist in the world of the story in order to be cloned? I think?

Re: Question

(Anonymous) 2013-07-28 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
No, because they're clones, not real people.

Also, because they're historical figures, so that would make it historical fiction if they weren't clones, not RPF.

I think when people hear "RPF" they usually think of it being about living people. Lots of novels have been written about historical figures and while I suppose that's a kind of RPF because, hey, it is fiction about real people, but it gets actual respect and publishing deals and things, while fics about pop stars or whoever doesn't. It's like how you can write a Sherlock Holmes story or a sequel to a Jane Austen novel and it gets called a pastiche, not fanfic (even though it's still fanfic).

If it does then we're going to have tell the Doctor Who and Star Trek canon writers.

Nah, as soon as you say clone then you've made it clear it isn't the real person but a living flesh-xerox.

If Riverworld doesn't count, I don't think that does, either.

In my experience, people's reactions tend to change depending on how far you go back. Clones of, say, Cleopatra and Alexander the Great would be received differently than, for instance, John Lennon and Lady Di.

I think it depends on whether it involves considerable quantities of sex and tinhatting.
