Checking 'my anime list'

(Anonymous) 2013-07-28 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
And I've realised I've watched 48 anime in the last eleven months and two weeks.

Recommend me some decent series, because fuck it, I want to hit fifty in a year.

My taste is genuinely fairly eclectic, so almost anything goes as long as it's good.

Well, here's mine that I haven't updated for a while: http://myanimelist.net/animelist/Ratatosk . I consider anything seven or above good, I almost never give tens and very rarely nines.

Watch Darker Than Black, then Ghost in the Shell SAC, and finally finish with Serial Experiments Lain.

Realise you've missed out on some of the best anime in years.

...Wow, you're super harsh. God Bless.

Seriously, anime fans are way too nice.

*does napkin math*

Just under a series a week. Standard series of twenty six series equals over three episodes a day, every day, for a year. I.e. more than an hour a day dedicated to anime.

And that's if we're not including longer series like Full Metal Alchemist, Soul Eater, or the big three.

Not OP
...Are you saying that's too much? Because one hour per day is barely anything to me.

An hour a day is not actually that much time for a hobby, anon.

...Isn't watching an hour or two of anything pretty normal, though?

Hell, I had a period of about a year or two where I watched two full-length movies every night, and even that didn't seem like much time.

Tsuritama: An adorable anime about a boy who has trouble making friends, the cheerful alien who decides to befriend him for the sake of catching fish, the secret agent following the alien (who of course gets overwhelmed by the power of friendship) and the poor kid who gets sucked into the mess by merit of being the only one of them who actually knows how to fish. Together, they save Japan!

Black Rock Shooter: the subconscious minds of psychologically damaged girls take the form of superhuman teenagers in a psychedelic world and fight each other in order to relieve the girls' pain. (AKA Lesbian Subtext: The Anime)

Baccano!: A story about why, when attempting to hijack a train, you should first make sure you're the only one trying to hijack it. If you like gangsters, immortals, demons, thieves, and crazy, over-the-top awesomeness, this is the anime for you.

Kino's Journey: An androgynous young adventurer and their talking motorcycle companion explore a fantastic world, with only one rule to follow: never stay in a country for more than three days.

Nijuu Mensou no Musume (aka The Daughter of Twenty Faces) - Young girl gets adopted by an international thief named Twenty Faces (taken from Edogawa Rampo's classic detective novels), and he teaches her the tricks of his trade. Stuff happens, Twenty Faces disappears and she ends throwing herself into the mysteries that he left behind. It takes place in the 1950s IIRC, so that's kind of cool as well.

Emma: A Victorian Romance. It's my all-time favorite anime because of the great character, the attention to detail, and the all around good story.

Slayers - you could easily tip over the 50 mark with it since there's five series within it. (Or four if you count the last two as two parts of one.) Comedy and drama and high-fantasy adventures with an awesome lady protagonist who don't take shit from anyone and sasses deities on a regular basis.

Aim For the Top! Gunbuster - short sci-fi/mecha series that could be considered a prototype for Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. Also has a pretty rad lady protag who goes through a good character arc in a short time.

King of Braves: GaoGaiGar - slow burn monster-of-the-week mecha series made To Sell Toys that does a lot of good worldbuilding and takes a hard turn for the awesome at the midway point. Opening theme's an earworm. Recommended if you enjoy Nobuyuki Hiyama yelling heroic things at bad guys. Bit long at 49 episodes and a 7-episode follow-up OVA, though.

Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: The 08th MS Team - what got me into Gundam. Bunch of average soldiers on Earth fighting with mass-produced mobile suits. No god-tier ace protagonist, no ridiculous Newtype bullshit like most other same-setting Gundam stuff.

Lucky! I've been having trouble with finding stuff that appeals to me in the last year or two, so I'm kind of having a dry spell.

No one has mentioned Mushi-Shi yet. So I will! Go watch it!

Mahou Tsukai Tai/Magic User's Club is pretty good if you can tolerate a bit of camp, and fairly short.

Princess Nine is awesome except for the ending.

Neia Under Seven is slow-paced but pretty good anyway.

For some nice short ones - Mononoke (twelve episodes) and Haibane Renmei (thirteen).

Mononoke is Japanese horror and has absolutely amazing art direction, like ink drawings. It's basically made up of short stories. There's also a connected story (three episodes) that's part of the Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales series (Bake Neko, the last arc).

Haibane Renmei is all one story and much more 'typical' in art style, but the story and characters are amazing, and the music is beautiful. A girl wakes up in a cocoon with no memories other than a dream of falling, growing wings and learning about the world she's woken up into.
