The trope's called "Nintendo Hard" for a reason. Old School Nintendo games were awesome about making people feel like scrubs until they'd dumped about 20+ hours into a game trying to beat it.

That said, if it's too rough for you to handle without cheat codes, then use the cheat codes. Not everyone likes having their asses handed to them by little 8-bit monsters over and over again; it's important that you have fun while playing, otherwise what's the point?
