I love her silver dress and never much cared for this one, but having the Fairy Godmother fix the original one instead would have been a better story.

Not sure if it was her dream dress, but it was the one she wanted to make with the dress she had at hand.

I think part of the need for a new dress was to follow the story of how her step-family didn't recognize her at the ball. If the Fairy Godmother had just repaired the old one, they would've known it was her right away.

I mean, it still doesn't explain the Clark Kent syndrome, but it's one reason at least.
