Re: Unlikeable characters

If I think a character is an asshole but the story acts like they're the bestest person ever, or glosses over their flaws, I will start to loathe that character. THAT makes a character unlikeable to me.

Exactly this. The worst thing a story can do is try to convince me of something without providing me any concrete demonstrations of why it's true, and it's especially bad with protagonists, who are frequently described with glowing terms, and then spend the actual story behaving in the opposite fashion.
