Why do you consider Duo to be a Southerner? He's from the L2 colony -- which is American, yes, but not specifically the south.

(If this was something that was added in the English dub, ignore me. I've never seen that.)

I was about to ask this. I don't remember Duo ever being specified as Southern. I watched both the dub and the sub and I think that would have stuck with me, since I'm Southern. XD

not op but iirc didn't scott mcneil have a bit of a twangy way of doing his lines? ...man it has been too ling since I've seen that show

[Picture is Duo Maxwell from the anime "Gundam Wing" and Sam Merlotte from the TV show "True Blood". Duo is a teenager with light skin and long light brown or light blond hair pulled into a braid with large bangs/forelock. He is wearing a red sweatshirt and a blue jacket over that. He has some strange contraption around his shoulders and he looks like he is concentrating. Sam is a man with tanned skin, short wavy hair a dark blond or light brown, brown eyebrows and the beginnings of a beard and mustache. He is wearing a white and gray tartan shirt. He looks somewhere between surprised and happy.]

I was WAY too proud of myself when I discovered this:

[Picture of Duo] Plus 25 years equals [Picture of Sam]

Never mind the fact that they are both Southern and they both grew up without their biological parents.

Bonus secret: I'm pretty sure one of the main reasons I liked Sam so much was because he reminded me of Duo, it just took me a year to figure it out.

don't do drugs, kids

Ewwww gross. Don't ruin my nostalgic memory of my crush on Duo for me.

....Duo is southern?

O_o

Nice headcanon, but he doesn't have the accent...but I can kind of see Duo in Sam...

(Anonymous) 2013-07-30 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
To be perfectly fair (I'm NOT the OP), you can be from the South, live there until legally an adult and then abscond with yourself, and never have had the accent a day in your life.

I'm from Texas (born and raised, my entire family has some variety of Southern accent, mostly Arkansas) and not one person anywhere on any continent has ever guessed right if the question ever came up. They're usually guessing some midwestern state, Ohio, or I did have someone ask if I was Russian once (that one was WAY out of left field, not even a drop of my heritage is Russian...it still makes no sense to me).

So it's possible. Unlikely. But possible/i>, and it's not ever said in canon, so...yeah. It doesn't even make sense to me in my head that Duo would be "Southern", though...

(Anonymous) 2013-07-30 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
He's from a space colony, so I doubt he's a Southerner.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-30 09:53 am (UTC)(link)
plz tell me what variation of american accent american space colony ppl use thx

(Anonymous) 2013-07-30 12:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Did you even read my comments, you English comprehension-deficient idiot?

I know. My dad grew up in Arkansas and had accent, to my ears anyway. But it's hard to believe you don't, not entirely. Cause even HE, when he left the area, had a bit of an accent. But it wasn't very strong at all. only noticeable in a few word pronunciations.

Duo, however, isn't Southern. He never sounded Southern or anything. Ok, let me rephrase that: He had a few words here and there that were kinda Southernish, but then he'd follow it up with generic American the majority of the time. Depends on who he hung out with when he was growing up on the L2 colony. He may have been around a sect of orphans who came from a part of the colony that may have had it's roots from the South, but he was not. *shrug*

Duo's not a Southerner because he's not from the south - he grew up on a SPACE COLONY.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-30 09:54 am (UTC)(link)
maybe he's from the bottom half of the colony man you don't know his life

(Anonymous) 2013-07-30 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
I'm trying to figure out how you got Southern for Duo... especially given that his English voice actor is and Australian-born Canadian.

[identity profile] baranohanayome.livejournal.com 2013-07-30 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
Duo is a colony kid. He's not from the southeastern U.S. and thus probably wouldn't have absorbed any of that regional culture.

Also, I really don't see the resemblance, but then I don't watch True Blood...

(Anonymous) 2013-07-30 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
I... am now motivated to watch True Blood. Congratulations OP! Parallels to Gundam Wing/Duo Maxwell never fail to buy me. haha

Having said that, if anyone's read "Kim" by Rudyard Kipling (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kim_%28novel%29), it's basically Novel-Prize winning India!Orphan AU fanfic starring homeless orphan!Duo adventuring with Father Maxwell. It's awesome.
onthehill: Duo is looking at something exciting (duo)

[personal profile] onthehill 2013-07-30 08:51 am (UTC)(link)
mind blown. No wonder I can't help loving Sam

(Anonymous) 2013-07-30 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Um...what? That is not a Southern accent. If I had to peg his dub voice for anything, it would be stereotypical surfer dude voice. Why you ruin this shit for me Scott McNeil?! Young me definitely screamed at the television the first time I heard his dub voice. I might have flipped a table. It was that bad. But certainly not Southern. Same for Kouga, another Scott McNeil special. There's something very WTF about a surfer dude wolf guy from ancient times.
