I prefer to think of him as being 30 years out of date.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-30 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
That was how I thought of him too - like he'd just stepped out of the 1950s.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-30 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
This is like the perfect description of his character.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-29 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I could see that. There's certainly something neuroatypical about him.

[Picture is Dale Cooper from the TV show "Twin Peaks". He is a man with light olive skin, short dark hair combed back and is wearing a dark suit and tie with a white shirt.]

I interpret Cooper as a high-functioning autistic.

sorry no but I've seen it on the internet a lot when autism comes up. Also I've seen some pretty awful instances of it on reddit. I'm just used to seeing it a lot on various places online.

I've seen it in a few secrets about autism. Like I remember there was a secret about a portrayal of a character with Aspergers and this person just HAD to come in and tell us about how her sister who works with autistic children has had a few nasty instances. Which parsed to me as "LOOK HOW AWFUL AUTISTIC PEOPLE ARE...AREN'T THEY OBNOXIOUS?"

Also I've been told by some anon on this site that since Asperger's is not on the DMV anymore that I 'can't' use it and I should now just start considering myself 'mildly autistic' . (to hell with that. I'm not one of those people who uses it as an excuse or defines themselves by it /thinks they're better than other because of it...but damn it , it was what I was originally diagnosed with and it's a hell of a lot more specific than 'mildly autistic' .) Also 'ass burgers' comments.

But yeah I've seen some nasty comments when the subject of autism comes up. Sorry ...no offense..it's just a sensitive subject. Those kind of remarks actually hurt me and make browsing comments about autism really troublesome.

I sympathize with you on the Aspergers part, I only got a diagnosis a few years ago (can I mention I'm in my 30s?). All it means to me is "Oh, so this, this and that I do has a name. Good to know.".

Of course he was strange, but autistic? What makes you think that?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-30 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Yawn. Everyone on the Internet, real or fictional, sooner or later gets "diagnosed" as a high-functioning autistic by someone.

This. He was just a little weird-- and barely that. Just an old-fashioned, intelligent, and easily excited guy that really loves his job and the people he works with.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-30 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know if Cooper can really be classed as "a little" weird. I think the only reason how bizarre behavior didn't seem bizarre was because everyone else in the show was just as bizarre or just went along with it.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-30 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Here's the thing-- a LOT of mildly autistic people do not come across as cartoon stereotypes of THE AUTISM. We come across as people who get a little too excited about things, and sometimes, yes, as people who stepped out of the wrong era. Maybe the OP sees Dale Cooper as mildly autistic because they identify with some of the mannerisms or speech/thought patterns that the character has (if they themselves are on the spectrum), or because he reminds them of a person in their life who is autistic.

I 'diagnose' a lot of characters myself, not because it is a trendy thing, not because they scream 'I AM QUIRKY AND ATYPICAL', but because I recognize in them things that I do or say or a way that I perceive the world that I am told is not normal. For some of us, this is not a trend but a search for representation, for a character we can identify with and call ours. Please stop acting like we should stop playing with 'your' toys, and please stop telling us we are doing fandom 'wrong' by looking for this.

Not everyone on the spectrum identifies with Rainman or the kid from Touch. It doesn't hurt you in any way if some of us share our headcanons. It doesn't change the established canon-- especially in the case of Twin Peaks!-- if we have our fun too.
