Sort of a bit off-topic, but I haven't seen SBL yet-- what had you annoyed about it? I'm sort of on the fence on whether or not I want to bother, but I'm only a casual fan of his to begin with.

Not the Secret Maker but I've heard a lot of complaints about how the main character has no redeeming qualities. I thought he was hilarious. I loved him.

What lack of redeeming qualities? He was human.

Either way, I loved him and the movie, so bummed it didn't do well.

I loved the movie, maybe because I grew up in a town near the one he grew up in and saw exactly what he was going for in the film. It's so much like that area that it almost hurt at times... It hit very close to home for me.

I was annoyed by some of the preachiness in the book, but in the movie I was happy that we weren't made to side with Carson. He wasn't perfect and he was definitely an asshole, but there were still parts that made it easy to like him, like with his grandma. I mostly liked the adult stories in the movie with Allison Janney and Christina Hendricks- the kids were more so-so...

It was mostly the film-version that bored/annoyed me. Actors who I've seen do well in other things (Colfer, Willson, Janney) were inexplicably off through the whole thing, and as much as I thought the characters were human 'all people are awful' can only carry a book/movie so far. But I liked it more than Land of Stories, which was good but very childish to me.
