You can never go wrong with Love and Rockets by the Los Bros Hernandez. I adore them to pieces. And anything by Faith Erin Hicks. She has yet to put out a bad comic book.

Who is your favorite character? I'm torn between Redlance and Kahvi.

My favorite character is Skywise, but my favorite couple is Dewshine and Scouter (and I'm delighted at the tribond thing with Tyleet).

By independent I'm assuming you mean not Marvel or DC, so here goes:

Scott Pilgrim (manchild falls in love with emotionally-distant hypocrite)
Irredeemable (Superman analogue the Plutonian loses his shit and becomes the world's greatest mass-murderer while his friends in the Justice League analogue try to figure out who he is and how to stop them -- includes a character who is essentially the Tenth Doctor)
Incorruptible (in the wake of Plutonian snapping, his major arch enemy decides to become a force for good as a response, but having no moral compass has no idea how to do it and tends to surround himself with good people to help guide him down the right path)
Transmetropolitan (futuristic gonzo journalist wreaks havoc and brings down corruption while swearing a lot)
Freakangels (what would happen if the kids from Midwich Cuckoos grew up?)
Black Summer (Superman analogue John Horus decides that the only way to protect America is to kill the president; everyone else has to deal with the fallout)
Invincible (teenage son of Superman analogue Omni-Man is elated when he finally develops superpowers but then the shit starts to hit the fan and IT NEVER STOPS.)

evil_little_dog: My dog, Pewter (Puppy - Pewter)

Strangers In Paradise by Terry Moore. I rec this to anyone who reads comics. You can get them collected in books or as individual comics, still.

Bone!

Man, what a classic Bone was. It was such a good comic, and I loved it when I was a kid. It's kind of weird that you don't see it mentioned more often, actually. It's a shame.
cloud_riven: Stick-man styled Apollo Justice wearing a Santa hat, and also holding a giant candy cane staff. (Default)

You should definitely read Bandette. It's about this vigilante thief person who is ridiculously adorable and smiles a lot. The clean and simple art style makes me think of French comics like Tintin, 80s mystery teen cartoons, and silver age happiness. It's goooooood.

The old Valiant line (before the reboot, bleh) had some pretty awesome titles, if you can find them now. Eternal Warrior, Archer & Armstrong, Timewalker, Rai, Magnus Robot Fighter, Turok, The Second Life of Dr. Mirage, Solar, and Harbinger, among others.

Digger, by Ursula Vernon. It just won a Hugo and is going to be released in one of those gigantic bells and whistles omnibus editions thanks to a kickstarter campaign, but it's available for free online at diggercomic.com. A wombat miner ends up a long way from home and allies herself with some very strange companions as she tries to find her way back.
