Food That is Fast to Make but Awesome to Eat

(Anonymous) 2013-07-30 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
I made an EPIC steak sammich yesterday, F!S:

I fried a steak, slapped it between two pieces of garlic toast with romaine, horseradish, and mustard, and it was the best thing I have ever eaten. Twenty minutes from my brain going "No this craving for steak is not going to go away no matter what you do and I do not even begin to care how late the hour is," I was eating happily.

What are the quickest recipes you make/have made, that have yielded the most awesome results, F!S?

I love smoked salmon slices on toast with olive oil and pepper. Bonus points if you have some fancy oil with herbs; almost anything works.

Chicken, avocado, munster sandwich, with spinach if I have any. Maybe a little mayo and/or mustard. Mmmmm...

A floating island with a microwave. It's easy and quick!

http://www.chefpatrice.tv/recipes/floatingislands.php (it wasn't this recipe, but you get the drift. The only thing is that you need to be careful, it's better to undercook and add a bit more time than to overcook, then it's ruined). Also, if you need to thicken your egg whites a little bit, you can add a small pinch of salt before mixing.
You could also make and microwave the custard (there must be some recipes for that), but you have to be careful not to cook the yolks with the hot milk or it becomes all grainy...

I think I am daily surprised by how GOOD a lettuce/tomato/protein of choice/condiment of choice(mayo-mustard-sweet relish)/cheese slice/good bread sandwich can be. And I usually cook my meat in batches (sliced beef/cubed chicken/etc.) and freeze so that the longest part of preparing the sandwich is toasting the bread while microwaving the meat. That being said, props for bringing it to the next level with garlic toast :D

For fast, I will never forget the day I learned how delicious chicken can be just coating the whole piece with a mixture of salt/pepper/flour (.25 tsp/.25 tsp/2 TBP) and quickly pan-frying it in butter, then dicing it after. Juicy and savory for pasta, salad, sandwiches, etc.

I also really liked the time I thought to try microwave old-fashioned oatmeal with honey, peanut butter, and ground black sesame. It's certainly a thick mixture, but at under 3 min to prep, I loved it enough to eat it almost every morning until I finished that bag of sesame powder!

Mug cakes - it's a cake you make in a mug in the microwave!

We've also made this awesome egg'n'avocado mix - hardboiled eggs and avocado diced and mixed with some lemon juice. You can add hot spices to it, too, but I like it plain C:

Smoked salmon slices wrapped about a little bit of cream cheese. It's yummy, and super fast!

I chopped up a steak, cooked it in a skillet (I hate calling that frying, even though I know it's valid word) with some seasonings and when it was nearly done, added some frozen broccoli.

I meant to make rice, but didn't, and I don't regret it.

Call it sauteeing; I think it's more accurate anyway.
