I figured it was the loss (or perhaps failure would be more accurate) of Sephiroth that pushed him farther over the deep end into lumpy pasty mad scientist cliche.

Also, isn't this secret a repeat? Or was it passed around on tumblr first?

Except I don't think he would have counted Sephiroth a failure at all. Hojo's standard M.O. is making weaponized monsters, after all, and for all that he looks human Sephiroth ended up being the most monstrous and dangerous of them all.

AYRT
Success until Nibelheim, when he broke down and everyone assumed that he died. So then a failure in the eyes of others. I always thought that took a toll on Hojo, though not in the sense it would a functional father…

I don't know. Even after the Nibelheim incident I don't think that Hojo personally considered Sephiroth a failure; I mean, if he did, then why would he start his "cloning" project to make more of him? Whether or not other people considered Sephiroth a success or a failure just isn't something I think Hojo would concern himself with.

I tend to think it is the even simpler reason: There's thirty years time difference.

Of course that is rendered invalid if the Hojo sprite is exactly the same in the flashback to what happened back then, as it is seen in the original game.
