Someone asked Isayama if Hanji was male or female because they couldn't tell. Basically, they insulted Isayama's style by saying that. He then wrote a trollish tweet that went something like "well if you canÄt tell then I'd better not say anything lolol". People on tumblr then got it into their heads that surely, that meant that Hanji was non-binary/agender/trans and started attacking anyone who dared to call Hanji a "she". It was very embarassing. I've stayed away since then.

Can I ask how being uncertain of a character's gender equals insulting the art style? That doesn't really make that much sense to me as you can mistake people's gender IRL and when a group of characters in any media are wearing unisex uniforms it's easy to do.

Deidara from Naruto comes to mind. I know people thought he was a girl for awhile. Though I admit I'm not aware how the artist reacted to that confusion as I wasn't in the fandom except for fic reading.

Because his art style is/has been a little shaky, as it's his first manga and he's still learning and creating his style. Sometimes his female characters--Hanji being a good example--ended up looking a little masculine (Hanji especially due to her height/breasts being small and hidden under her shirt and cloak), and this caused the "omg is she even a boy or a girl" debate. The question was rudely stated, and he responded basically with "I'm not even going to justify that with an answer", which then. Yeah. Made basically the entire Tumblr fandom flip their shit and claim her as agender/non-binary. Which would be fine, if they didn't literally attack everyone that uses female pronouns for her and considers her female.

That's just it: Having a headcanon about a certain character is all fine and great, but telling others they are transphobic assholes because they don't accept someone's headcanon as fact is just taking things too far.

But the fandom is a bit insane in general - just look at all the fuss they make, from the German lyrics in the opening, to the names, to the characters' sexuality. They keep jumping to conclusions and act in this very annoying "my opinion is fact and you're an asshole if you have a different opinion" way. I want to go slap people as soon as I set foot in the tag. So I stay out. I don't feel like I'm missing much. (It helps that I dropped both manga and anime as well by now.)
