It's not southern France but Strasbourg is lovely. We only spent a day in France (we were vacationing in Germany) but we visited some lovely villages/towns along the way that had those charming old buildings and farm markets. Ribeauville and Riquewihr were two of those towns, if I recall correctly.

As for the south, Marseille is supposed to be beautiful, but then, so is pretty much all of southern France. At least if you believe my friends, who spent half a year travelling through the country. ;)
