typing question

how do you quickly type that em dash thingy? (the one that is longer than

-

I mean)

I see it in fanfiction often, so do they have the ALT code memorized, or something? I've never seen it on my keyboard

MS Word will automatically format it for you that way if you have a hyphen with spaces in between words.

Otherwise, I think it's Ctrl + Alt + - (using the minus key on the numeric keypad, not the hyphen just above the letter P), or Alt 0151 (also on numeric keypad).

type two dashes together and then the next letter and it automatically becomes a hyphen in Word.
