Same here. It bothers me how I'm being told time and time again how super smart he is, but that on the other hand he's nothing special in the physical department.

1. I've never seen him do something that I'd count as highly intelligent. Courageous, surprisingly calm in the face of danger, yup. But that's not the same. Being rational alone doesn't turn you into Stephen Hawking.

2. If he's such a weakling, why the fuck wasn't he thrown out? Obviously he's not half as bad as we're being told by word of god. I mean I know this already from shoujo anime where every girl looks the same and still someone tells the protagonist she's fat (!??!??!).

He just doesn't work for me because I find him ugly and the show vs. tell discrepancy is setting my writerly hair on fire.

1. He's come up with several tactical maneuvers to fight the titans...it takes more than rationality to figure out the best way to clear out the supply depot or use a friendly titan to its best advantage.

2. He's not an actual weakling. He's got a ton of self-image issues and loses faith in himself under pressure. He's not as physically talented as most of the others, but he is shown functioning fine when he's not, you know, directly confronting monsters with nothing but his own (underestimated by himself) skills to protect him.

1. Everyone could have come up with that if they hadn't been too frantic. Besides, it was a plan that could have easily failed and it almost did. So even if everyone else is really that dumbed down to make him shine, it's not what I'd call super intelligent. Kind of Sherlock syndrome.

2. In the show itself they say his strength is pathetic when it obviously isn't from what we can see, which is what bothers me here. No, he's not an actual weakling, but the show insists he is.

If all you're surrounded by is exceptionally-fit soldiers, then being the weakest/frailest one of them, you're still going to feel like shit but probably look/be more strong than average to civillians.
