Why wouldn't it? Mahjong is a competition. There's plenty of interesting thigns that can derive from competition and a love of a sport or game, even if it's typically 'boring.' Chihayafuru is a great example of that, though it's about karuta, not mahjong.

As for Saki... the characters had their moments, but I had to drop it because the dumb fanservice just got worse and worse.

Came here to mention Chihayafuru. It's so intense! Honestly, at times I found it more intense than Attack on Titan.
