I used to be the same way.

Even now I have to make a conscious effort not to avoid people in mascot/fursuits or face-obscuring cosplay.

I think it's a very human reaction, really.

Maybe next time tell them "wow, neat costume, it took me a while to remind myself that you are a person wearing a disguise and not the character!"

except don't tell this to a pyramid head if you see one, just look at them with very wide eyes and make a show of being scared and getting away

better be safe than sorry is all I'm saying
