I don't think he's a bad writer either. I think his familiarity with TGWTG universe and characters, and having established a long-term fanbase, resulted in successful, more-or-less decent anniversary specials, though there was that one special where nothing behind the scenes went right at first and Doug almost canceled the whole thing.

But with Demo Reel, he was starting from scratch and was under a lot of pressure because everyone was (understandably) upset about him (understandably) hanging up NC's hat. So he ended up throwing ideas a the wall, getting lots of negative feedback, or none, which was quite rare coming from that fandom, and I think he was partly burned out but because he's a natural workaholic, he tried to push past it and it didn't work. With NC he could skate by with meh videos here and there, but with DR it started shaky and never had the chance to pick up.

I can understand criticism toward his type of humor and even agree with it sometimes, but I do think he's got the basics of writing down. With DR it's just that the timing and environment was off for him to create something completely new, which negatively affected his headspace because he wasn't getting/feeling encouraged to push through like he did during the third (?) anniversary special.
