OP

I guess I sort of treat them like statues? I like their cosplays, but instead of complimenting them I might just stare at them, or take a picture without saying anything. I think I've been getting better, but I have to force myself to act appropriately. But I was with a friend at a con and she didn't seem to have any problem just talking to the cosplayer.

Ah, I see. I think being stared at is something cosplayers in general are expecting, even at a con, but I see how the picture thing might be creepy to some cosplayers. But it's good that you're conscious of it and avoiding it.

Don't worry too much, OP--the mask is a two-way divide, and holding a conversation can be a weird experience for the person behind it too. Granted, my experience with this is from being in a costume that's meant to look like an actual statue, so being stared at (unblinkingly) and talked about like I'm not there is kind of the intended effect, but chances are anyone in face-obscuring cosplay is not going to be surprised or offended when people don't interact normally with them. There are people who can walk up to creepy-ass faceless cosplayers and strike up a conversation with no apparent cognitive dissonance or hesitation, but they're by far the exception.
