Things that held up after taking off the nostalgia goggles

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2013-08-01 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I was watching Digimon 01 (01 and 02 are streaming on Netflix in the US) and I thought that my love of it was just nostalgia and it would turn out to be really awful. But, it actually wasn't as bad as I was expecting it to be.

You guys ever expect a childhood thing to actually be awful when viewed as an adult, but it wasn't?

Hey Arnold.

Ironically I liked Hey Arnold more as an adult. I actually understood things like the fact Helga's mother is a depressed alcoholic, or that guy in the Thanksgivings day special was Mr.Simmons' boyfriend and he hadn't come out to his mother yet, or that Lila put on a show because she was poor/her mother died.

Yes, actually-- I watched Johnny Bravo on tv the other day and laughed just as hard as I did back when I was a kid. Somehow a lot of the old CN shows have really stood the test of time.

I don't have an answer for the question but I just want to say that Digimon is amazing yo. ♥ Were you watching it because of Odaiba Memorial Day?

#digimon was trending on tumblr and I wanted to see why. Apparently, it's the 14th anniversary of the kids going to the Digital world in the show. (Is that Obaida Memorial Day?) Through that I found out it was on Netflix and I'd been watching to rewatch anyway.

I'm trying to figure out why I loved Matt so much. I guess at that age I liked brooding jerkasses.

Off the top of my head:
- Batman: The Animated Series
- Calvin and Hobbes
- The Chronicles of Narnia
- most Disney movies

Also, some of the Goosebumps books were surprisingly good. I wouldn't call them fine literature, but they weren't all as cheesy and formulaic as I thought they would be.

A lot of the old Nick shows. Angry Beavers, Rocko's Modern Life.

And Night Court. So painfully 80s (the hair!), but it's held up really well.

IA on Night Court. You can stream tons of Night Court eps from YouTube.

Favorite movie as a kid. Turned out it was better now that I got all the jokes.

I just want to also state how much I love Digimon. Especially since my love for Space Jam has not held up as well.

Something I do love after all these years is a Muppet Family Christmas. One of my favorite childhood Christmas movies and I still watch it.

Final Fantasy VI. Chrono Trigger. Hell, Super Metroid is still awesome.

Some Disney movies.

Teen Titans comes to mind, along with Lizzie McGuire and Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends. plus the obvious Disney movies that are generally agreed to be timeless.

Animaniacs. I didn't really expect it to be bad [I rarely do unless I'm watching 'cause I know it's bad] but...it's held up really well.

From childhood it's The Goonies and The Muppets (show, not movies; I didn't like them even as a kid).

From my teens it's Freaks & Geeks, My So-Called Life, and the X-Men cartoon.

The InuYasha manga. As an adult I now notice how melodramatic it was, but now the snark appeals to me, and the adventure and relationship aspects are still hooking, if in a different way.

It was not incompetently written as I was fearing it would be with a more objective read-through, and now I appreciate characters I hadn't favored as a teenager.

Treasure Planet.

I loved that movie when I was much younger, and I thought to myself, recently, that I was remembering it with nostalgia googles. And no, no I was not; it's still one of my favorite movies. :)

Digimon! Oh my goodness that brings back memories~! <3

Um, something that hold up for me is Static Shock. I went and watched it again and I love it. Wow, do I love it.

Wizard of Oz. I dunno, maybe its status as a classic makes this obvious, but... I just remember watching it on TCM a few years ago (I'm well into adulthood, so that counts as "view[ing] as an adult) after not having seen it for ages and thinking, "Damn, this is really amazing." Hell, even a lot of the effects hold up ("Surrender Dorothy"), and it's a "kids movie" from the 30s!

Digimon for me too. I never stopped loving it and now that Nicktoons in the US is playing it, I'm watching it. Angewomon and WarGreymon are still awesome and Gomamon is still that awesome snarky jerk (looking forward to Tamers for Terriermon for this reason).

But also Batman and Superman TAS, Hey Arnold, Mulan, The Little Mermaid, The Lion King, and Beauty and the Beast.

When I was a kid/young teen I really liked the Pokémon Adventures manga, but reading the newest series after not having read the series in a long time made me go "Ugh, this is really bad" and I thought I'd just outgrown it. But when I later went back and read through older volumes I was like "This is actually really good characterization and the story doesn't give the impression that the author is running through a checklist of shounen manga clichés"

So Pokémon Adventures, I guess; the older volumes at least.
