I'm sorry you got made fun of. Sailor Moon is glorious! But especially depending on the era in which you watched it, a lot of people just don't "get" anime/animated shows. Pity them for missing out on the wonder and joy!

I have no idea which scene this is, though.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-02 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
One of the death scenes from the end of the Negaverse/Dark Kingdom arc. They cut it out of the Dic dub because it's just a bit traumatic.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-02 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh goooossssssshhhhhhhh, okay. No wonder I didn't remember it; it really was traumatic. D:

(Anonymous) 2013-08-03 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Man, the whole ending was a spike-knuckled gutpunch. Made the monster-of-the-day slog worth it, though.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-02 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I get the feeling Sailor Moon fans still get this form of hate. Fans of Magical Girl shows in general.

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-08-02 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I still get called a weaboo by people who don't seem to get what a lame insult that is. But at some point in my early 20s I realized that I shouldn't have to hide my love for something that's been a major part of my life since I was 9. So I went all out with the t-shirts and the bags and so on.

Unless it's Madoka, since it's seinen.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-03 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Obviously things that are made with a male target audience in mind are by default perceived as "better" because things that are made with a female target audience in mind HAVE to be vapid and dumb because girls are vapid and dumb, amirite bro.

Years before it became cool to be nerdy, people were little shitty assholes because they couldn't conceive of what was outside of their purview as being worth their time.

In fact they still do it. But being a nerd is totally kosher these days.

Honestly I've reached the age where I'm out of touch with it so I'm curious. What are the new qualifications for being a social pariah?

OP

Being a Brony/Furry still seems to invite being ostracized.

Re: OP

To be fair, in case of bronies it's their own fault.
I have never seen people force their fandom on other people like bronies did and still do.

"Watch an episode! Oh, you didn't like it? Watch more! Watch the entire first season and you'll like it! Watch it! Watch it or I'll spam you with ponies! I'll post ponies everywhere! I WANT TO CUM INSIDE RAINBOW DASH"

One of my fondest moments in 7th grade is when I overheard the 'popular girls' in my class fangirling over "the mysterious Tuxedo Mask". This after the same girls had spent the previous few years harassing me about watching cartoons and being too childish, among other things.

At the time I wasn't sure if they were serious or just finding new ways to torment me, but they seemed genuinely interested in the show as the year went on. I still giggle about the student council president exclaiming "I wonder who Tuxedo Mask is?" to her friends.

Sorry you were made fun of, OP. I was lucky enough to have friends who loved Sailor Moon, but I know a lot of people weren't.

Rei was always/is my favourite Sailor Scout <3 That scene makes me ;_____; everywhere.

spoilers for Sailor Moon

spoilers for Sailor Moon

[Picture is Rei Hino or Sailor Mars from the anime series "Sailor Moon." She is a young woman with light skin and long dark purple hair wearing a school uniform of a short-sleeved white blouse with a square red collar reaching her back. She is wearing a golden and red diadem and a red star earring. She is lying on a stone floor, visibly hurt and weak.]

When I was younger, I was teased a lot at school for loving a "baby's show". I wish I could go back, show them this moment, and shut their fucking mouths.

More details, to expand on the subject matter for those who don't know the show: this scene is from episode 45, the penultimate episode of the first season.

The 'floor' isn't stone, it's ice -- the scene is set near the North Pole. Mars has just been mortally wounded while fighting enemies who have already killed three of her teammates. Only one of the enemies remains, and is about to attack Sailor Moon, who has been traumatized into paralysis by the deaths of her friends.

Mars is barely able to move at this point, but manages to grab the enemy with one hand and let loose a massive fire attack that engulfs both of them. When it's done, she just has the strength to say a few words to Sailor Moon before dying.

Yep, I always wanted to show people who made fun of anime/Sailormoon all the death scenes and adult shit that went down on that show, but I mostly just kept quiet.

Being a fan of anime in the 90s did not do you any favors, I'm old enough that when I started liking Sailormoon anime was still mostly a fanboy game (and I was a young girl), and the mass public knew next to nothing about it.

My female friends my age liked Sailormoon of course, but everyone older then us made fun of it and I got constantly told "God I hate that Japanimation shit."

It might be better to go back and tell your younger self not to give a fuck about what they think.

Uhhh I feel like that wouldn't help. People like that are not likely to be open to being convinced that they're wrong.

This is weird because when I was young, Sailor Moon was the height of cool and everyone was into it and into collecting related merchandise and I was therefore the height of cool both for liking it and for having an extensive collection of paper cut-out dolls.

I feel this is the best occasion to throw in a page that made me laugh lately :

http://www.buzzfeed.com/lilyhiottmillis/sailor-moon-was-the-gayest-cartoon-on-television

Buzzfeed compiling all the gay... I can't ever call that undertones when characters were explicitly gay, and not just the evil ones, and not just for fun. It was very sweet.
Plus, crossdresser.
Plus, characters having sex changes when they transform into their masked alter-ego.

All reasons why versions outside of Japan were often carefully censored, at least in the dubbing...

Aw, my middle-school best friend and I got guff for loving this show among the few kids who even knew about it. Weirdly enough it was from other kids of similar nerdiness/geekiness where we all did band and academic competitions and accelerated classes, and sometimes shared comics and, pre-Internet, Monty Python quotes; but Sailor Moon was a hard stop where they wouldn't just say it wasn't for them or they didn't get it, but go on about it (it was "bubblegum", plus it's only popular even in Japan because the main character's a pretty blonde girl, but whatever because their eyes and hair are weird, and also...).

Funny thing is, one of the kids who teased me every day about it by saying things like, "Oh, what happened on Sailor Moon today? Did she throw stuff at monsters, LIKE ALWAYS?" said one day, "Haha, Sailor Moon broke up with her boyfriend today. Was it sad?" I was about to ignore him, when it hit me: "Wait, you were watching the show?" He reddened, then blanched, then never teased me again about it.

I hear you, OP.

Even when I tell people I'm into Sailor Moon people are like, "Oh, that show is boring/repetitive" and I blame the american dub for taking out all of the character development, death scenes, and queerness.

But screw the haters, because Sailor Moon is the show that taught me about love, friendship, strength, sacrifice, feminism, and a thousand other things.

There's actually this really good paper about Sailor Moon here: http://adventuresofcomicbookgirl.wordpress.com/2013/05/01/in-my-high-heels-i-will-punish-you/
