Favorite guilty pleasure book or book series?

[personal profile] queerwolf 2013-08-02 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Inspired because I just got the latest Anita Blake book from the library. This series has so gone downhill but I can't help myself. I love the characters and need to read more of them no matter how plotless/full of badly-written sex the books now are.

The Stephaine Plum series by Janet Evanovich. The series has taken a *serious* nose dive since her daughter started 'helping' her write the books, but I love the series too much to really convince myself to stop reading just yet.

I didn't know that about her daughter; do you know which book that started with? I've read up to #14, but somewhere around 9 or 10 I put the series down and took a good long break.

I admit to liking Forgotten Realm and Ravenloft books. There, I said it!

I don't know. Anime and manga, I guess. not because they're bad but because whenever I want to talk about them I can't get the image of terrible otaku out of my head and I always feel weird about it

Me too, fellow anon. Me too.

I consider my liking anime to be my "worst-kept secret". I don't exactly hide the fact that I watch it or anything, but I don't really talk about it unless prompted somehow. I still do this even though all the people who know I watch anime are nothing but accepting of that fact, at the very least.

The old Star Trek novels, the ones with black covers and yellow title font.

Those are the best, though.

Oh you poor masochist.

For me, I abandoned Anita Blake some time ago, but have recently really started enjoying the 'Hollows' series, even though playing the audiobooks around my writer girlfriend makes her wince.

Terrible tho they may be, I really am enjoying them.

The Sword of Truth.

Please don't judge me I know they're terrible books but I loved the first one and after that I kept reading the series to see what happens and also I have a bit of a crush on Kahlan because she is fabulous.

I have a whole shelf of Richard Laymon books tucked away. The rapey sex scenes do it for me.

He's formulaic and I laugh at his "Honest! This stuff is real!" attitude (or at least he had that going for his second book), but I LOVE the Robert Langdon novels by Dan Brown.

Yes yes, his female characters can be kind of problematic (though i feel his latest wasn't too bad...), you can predict much of the plot early, but I can't help it. They're fun and I can't put them down when I get a new one.

There are some appallingly Mary Sue-ish Star Trek TOS novels that I love with the force of nostalgia and the power of my id. Uhura's Song most of all.

I don't read much anymore, alas. But I still harbor immensely fond memories of the early Dragonriders of Pern books, Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles and Ramses the Damned, Piers Anthony's Incarnations of Immortality, early Dragonlance and Dark Elf stuff, and the Chronicles and Second Chronicles of Thomas Covenant (among others of the same era)...all of which I am given to understand are now held in varying degrees of contempt by fandom at large. ;_; Oh, also, Laura Ingalls Wilder's 'Little House' books.

You managed to keep reading after the were-leopards appeared? Dude, I salute you.

(Were-leopards tend to spell the end of a fantasy series, imo.)

The Teahouse webcomic. That comic is like an ultra-sparkly trainwreck.

I realized the irony of the first book being called Guilty Pleasures around Cerulean Sins. It was like a warning for what was to come, by the time I started reading them. It has become the guilty pleasure of many, but I only ever reread that one and Obsidian Butterfly.

I can't believe she's been writing the same character for 20yr!
