"I have no pity for people who convince themselves something is canon and proceed to throw a tantrum when confirmed otherwise"

LOL That basically describes the whole Remus/Sirius fandom right now.

I didn't know there were shippers like that for OUaT but I shouldn't be surprised. People just LOVE to delude themselves about subtext.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-02 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Right now?
Did pottermore denied it completely or something?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-02 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah basically. Said that Remus had never been in love before he met Tonks because he was always too afraid to let himself get close to anyone. And this little throwaway comment about Sirius always getting the women.

But

But that's completely in-character. Oh, fandom.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-03 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
I know! And now some of these shippers now consider this to be "bad ooc fanfiction" and that JKR is a queer-erasing/queer-baiting evil homophobe. I kid you not.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-03 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Well, the Sirius gets all the women part does feel like it has a touch of subtle homophobia the same as the whole thing with Charlie a few years ago did. It feels like an afterthought to say even though she didn't pair him with anyone in the books he still couldn't possibly be gay.

But yes, calling her homophobic for daring to pair Remus with a woman or saying that he wasn't in love with anyone else is kind of icky.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-03 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
how the hell does saying he gets all the woman sound homophobic in the slightest? especially if it was just a mention in his backstory and comparing him to his friends. if anything it's a slightly sexist comment if you squint.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-03 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Not on its own its not. But taken with her insisting that Charlie, who also wasn't paired in canon, wasn't gay, it does suggest that she doesn't want people thinking anyone but Dumbledore, who remained celibate for most of his life, is gay. Why else make offhand comments about characters being with women when there is nothing to suggest anything in canon one way or another.

I'm not saying it is any way intentional at all. I don't think she's purposefully trying to say no one else is gay. But it does feel like she has this subconscious reaction when people think other characters could be gay.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-03 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Wtf? There are lots of men in the series who were never paired up, like Seamus and Kinglsey and Regulus and Crabbe+Goyle and Pettigrew and Lockhart and Moody and... shall I go on? She was asked about Charlie, and the stand-out factor about Charlie was that he was interested in dragons.

I think you're reading way too much into it. Sometimes straight people forget about representation of non-straight people, because straight is the default to them. That doesn't make them homophobic.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-03 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, seeing straight the default that everyone is is homophobic. It isn't blatant, in your face homophobia, but yes it is homophobic.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-03 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
oh ffs

(Anonymous) 2013-08-03 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
No... no it's not. Yikes.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-03 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
No it's not? Pretending gay people don't exist is homophobic. Assuming the majority of people are straight when the majority of people are straight is not.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-03 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
I don't get how that is homophobic at all. It was already established in canon that lots of girls fancied Sirius and everyone found him to be handsome, and that he was attracted to women judging by the posters on his walls. The fact that he was popular + handsome + attracted to women + a teenager with a (probably) raging libido = Sirius "getting all the women".

(Anonymous) 2013-08-03 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe J/KR should proclaim more old wizards gay to make up for it.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-03 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Meh. I like the Remus part. I've never been a big fan of the "Sirius as a womanizer" thing though as he always seemed like the kind of guy who'd be loyal to one woman (or man) at a time. Ah well.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-03 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
I always imagined Sirius would fuck around lots but never have a steady girlfriend. I think James was more of the dating type. I always got the impression Sirius was just too obsessed with James to focus on anyone else.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-03 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know. Clearly that's the actual canon. I just always saw loyalty as Sirius' defining quality and saw him as kind of a serial monogamist who would stick with one girl at a time (but not necessarily for a long time).

(Anonymous) 2013-08-03 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Well screwing around doesn't mean he wasn't loyal. If you make it clear you're not interested in a relationship, you're not cheating or being disloyal.

Though I don't think Sirius was always loyal... look what he did to Remus.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-03 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
I know that. I just liked the idea of him focusing on one person at a time. Its like with his friendships: he focused on a few people rather than being friends with a whole lot of people even though he was pretty outgoing and attractive and could have made friends pretty easily. I guess it was just a personal interpretation. Not that big of a deal.

With Remus, I just don't think he thought things through. I don't necessarily think he saw it as being disloyal because he wasn't really even thinking about Remus at the time.If anything, I think he was focused on James' rivalry with Snape and wanting to impress him.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-03 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Ah yeah I guess. I guess I just can't see him in any sort of serious relationship, and I have no real idea why. But it could go both ways! Who knows, maybe we'll find out he had a serious girlfriend at some point through Pottermore.

The reason I don't see it as just a momentary lapse in judgement is because even like 20 years later he didn't seem to regret it at all. He would've had lots of time to think "oh fuck, I nearly ruined my friend's life" but that never seemed to happen. It's like he never, even in hindsight, thought about Remus' feelings.
