True.

Another thing I don't understand is the immediate assumption that getting off on torture is the same as getting off on torturing. Masochism is a lot more common than sadism; might just as well be the idea of being tortured that does it for them.

That's kind of a pointless argument imo. Who cares if they get off on fictional "getting tortured" or fictional "torturing." Who cares if they even identify with either of the characters, or only read fics as an uninvolved third-party. The point is that it's fiction and that's not the same as torturing, raping, doing whatever irl.
