I thought that was some pretty good audience manipulation tbh. Even people familiar with the book/movie canons, knowing how this is all going to turn out for Will Graham in the future, were still weirdly shocked when it was made especially obvious Hannibal was a super dick and lied about the encephalitis. Hannibal's people suit skills worked as far as duping a lot of viewers into thinking he cared about Will in any similar vein that Alana or Jack do.

I thought it was great audience manipulation too. I was thrown when Hannibal was exposed as being pure evil in his intentions towards Will... even tho I knew he was a complete dick and a monster. I actually dig the show more now that I know Hannibal's "kindness" was a lie.
