Does anyone else feel like this?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-03 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes I feel like most people here (and other places online) are so open-minded about sexuality-related things that it's always a tiny bit jarring when I'm on some site and someone makes fun of someone for being something other than straight, or even just assuming that everyone is straight and nothing else exists, and I have to go 'oh, right, a lot of places aren't so accepting' and it's a little bit odd at first. And of course that's not counting the random people I deal with in person that are even worse.

I don't even really know what my point is but... I guess thanks to you guys for being awesome and accepting people? :D

I definitely agree. Not just here, but a lot of places that I go...

There's a couple sites that I visit - two sports sites, actually (which I highly recommend if anyone happens to care about sports - Grantland, which is actually about half culture and half sports, and Sports On Earth) - both of which tend to be staffed mostly with really Internetty people who share both that openness and acceptance, and also the sense of humor (for Pete's sake, there's a regular Newsroom shipping recap on Grantland, which I'm pretty sure makes it totally unique among sports sites).

The thing is that the comments sections are often not that different from your usual sports site comments section - which means they're often terrible. There was a couple articles on race lately on Sports on Earth, and the comments were just awful. And, to bring it around, it really did make me thankful that there are communities like this and people around who aren't terrible that I can talk about stuff with. It's really, really good. So thanks everybody here and around the Internet for not sucking.

I get this. It's the same way when I go to a family reunion or have to interact with people outside my general wide peer group. I get so used to feminism, acceptance, whatever that it always takes me a second to react when I hear some "joke" or people making fun of bisexuality, or whatever thing it is. It's always this second of "waitwhat? Oh, right."

If it makes you feel better, a lot of places in RL are also becoming more and more accepting, even it might not seem as progressive. After all, every open-minded person on the internet exists somewhere out there in the physical world.

Just got back from seeing a classic opera (yay, the rest of f!s is already asleep), and the company added in a gay marriage as part of this mass wedding finale and everyone in the audience clapped and cheered. (Since the original opera was written in the 1800's, I highly doubt that was in the original libretto/staging.)
