Why is it an awkward question? I mean I don't agree with the hard core shippers and I think there are better ways to handle a situation like this, but I can't see why it should be awkward for them!? They definitely know about this ship/pairing (how could they not).. Only because they are two women and its a gay pairing and they both are sooo straight? So that's why it's awkward?

(I'm not attacking. Just curious)

The question itself was awkward and a lot of people felt some hardcore secondhand embarrassment from it.

Yea, you're making big assumptions. It has nothing to do with their gender and everything to do with the fact that if they say, "No, this isn't going to happen" (like they did) it might anger some of the fanbase (which, again, it did). I imagine they don't want to disappoint or anger people, but to be honest they risk doing so.

And the show has shown nothing even remotely sexual or romantic between the two of them, and Regina has tried to kill Emma and her family (more than once), so them getting together isn't exactly realistic at this point. Since that's the case, again, it doesn't surprise me that they basically said "That isn't our intent."

Yea, they could've said maybe or made a joke about it, but if they know it will never happen because of the writers then maybe they don't want to give the fanbase false hope.

It had nothing to do with the gender of the characters involved and more to do with the fact that the question was worded VERY aggressively. She basically accused the writers of queer-baiting and demanded a payoff.

Really it was just a case of the questioner not being able to distinguish between head canon and actual canon, so... awkward.

the question was worded in a really weird way. they asked lana if she was going to insist on swan queen becoming canon and that she could tell lana and jennifer shipped it because of their 'romantic screentime' like how do you respond to that? and then people sent jmo death threats on twitter because she made a joke about 'emma's love interests sharing a couch' when the dudes who played neal and hook were playing some kind of trivia game with her
