They could totally just ask, "So I read this book and it was similar to your fic. Did you borrow this idea? Hahaha."

If the prose isn't the same, this is likely. If the prose matches up very closely, they might have lifted it and changed some words. But it doesn't hurt to ask about the plot. Maybe they actually were inspired by something else.
