I am extremely curious what is creepy about Swan Queen that isn't also true for Rumbelle, honestly. (I don't ship anything)

Well for starters, Rumpel has never tried to kill Belle...

Plus, he's not a rapist.

That helps.

but a killer, a manipulative asshole, a person who tortures and beats people for his enjoyment..

yeah - I totally see your point

Oh, no one said he was a *good* person. Just better than Regina.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-04 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
he did force her into slavery, make her help him torture people, threw her around and locked her in a dungeon until he felt like doing otherwise. not to mention the shit he's done in storybrooke. I love Rumpelstiltskin but he should not have a love interest because he's a bad person.

I'm the anon Rumbelle shipper who posted about being at the panel, and the one who posted the big long essay about the differences I see between Rumbelle and SwanQueen. I hesitate to say that anyone shouldn't have a love interest (a significant other? partner? lover? Or are we just talking characters and not real people here) because they're a bad person. I mean, love doesn't work like that. If only people who deserved love had it, there'd probably be a lot fewer people, to start with.

The big thing for me is consent; if Belle didn't want to be with Rumpelstiltskin, then I'd say they weren't a couple. But despite the nasty shit he's done, she loves him. Despite the nasty shit Regina has done, Henry loves her. They're not a romantic couple, obviously, but I think Regina was a strict but otherwise mostly normal mother to Henry until she began to fear his pulling away, so I'm not surprised he loved her when she was just his mom, before the killing people and trying to convince him he was crazy started. Hell, despite the mindfucking and killing-your-true-love Cora pulled, Regina loved Cora, and broke down when Cora actually died even though she'd ordered her death before and thought she'd been killed then.

Love isn't rational and isn't necessarily a reward for good behavior. In fact I think the most unhealthy thing about Rumbelle is that Belle sometimes uses her affection as a reward for Rumpelstiltskin's good behavior, and Rumpelstiltskin respects her for that and expects her to hold him to her standards--but he still hasn't made a sincere attempt to change his behavior because it'd be the right thing to do, he only acts decently (for him) because Belle asks it. He doesn't have his own moral compass; Belle carries it for him. Just as Regina won't be able to make a start at redemption until she accepts responsibility for all the shit she's done and continues to do, Rumpelstiltskin, who does accept responsibility for the horrible shit he's done, needs to fucking stop doing it because it's wrong, not because Belle or Bae wants him to stop.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-03 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT, who is not the anon above me: for me, it comes down to the fact that while Rumpelstiltskin is a villain with a shitload of issues, and it's not fair to Belle that she's basically become his peripatetic conscience. Belle, at least as has been shown so far on the show, was not part of his grand plan to have the curse cast and be reunited with his son. Rumpelstiltskin, after he loses Bae, sees everyone and everything as potential tools to find his son, or threats, or both. He has no personal grudge against anyone but the fairies and Cora. He bears Belle no ill will when they first meet; she was meant to be a useful and decorative addition to his castle, like a tapestry or sculpture that could also do the dusting. And unlike Regina, Rumpelstiltskin admits he's a monster. He's done awful stuff and he knows it. He doesn't understand how anyone could set aside what he's done and love him anyway, and he doesn't expect or demand that anyone even like him, let alone love him.

Regina's laundry list of issues, on the other hand, revolve around her parents, who are both dead, and Snow White, and by extension, Snow White's family. When Regina cast the curse, I'm pretty sure she intended to kill baby Emma the way she had her guards try and kill Charming. To Regina, Emma represents the loss of Henry, her only family and the only person who still loves her, as well as being the daughter of her despised enemy. Emma sees Regina as the reason her family abandoned her, and as a psychopath (with some justification, because the writing in season 2 only makes sense if Regina is nuts. Regina doesn't understand why her subjects didn't revere and love her, why Owen didn't want to stay with her, or why her son is horrified by what she's done. She wants people to love her, but she doesn't understand that love can't be forced, whether by holding Graham's heart in her hand or casting a spell on Henry; it can only be given freely.) A Regina/Emma romantic relationship that grew from the one on the show would be full of dubcon powerplays at best. The closest I could see them getting to romance would involve a lot of hot hatesex. I don't ship for dubcon hatesex, and I don't see any way short of an extreme AU for Emma and Regina to have a respectful romantic relationship.

If someone took a crack at a Skin Deep style AU where Regina never cast the curse, Emma grew up in FTL, and the Charmings sought Regina's magical help, only for Regina to demand Emma become a servant in her castle in exchange, it might be interesting to see what Regina, who still hasn't acknowledged that people hate her for totally justified reasons, would do in that situation. Emma or Regina or both could totally be bisexual or pan. I just don't see them working out as a couple given the dynamic they have on the show. Just because their scenes together are intense doesn't mean it's romantic or sexual tension, and even if it was, just because you're attracted to someone doesn't mean you have to have a romantic or sexual relationship with them, especially if you hate or fear them. Maybe by season 7 or whatever Regina will have undergone a boatload of therapy and started taking responsibility for her actions, which include the deaths of a ton of people and the rape of at least one person, and she can start living a life that doesn't revolve around punishing the world for not giving her what she wants.

Sorry for the essay. I imagine you'd get a different answer depending on who you asked. I know there's a few people out there who ship both Rumbelle and SwanQueen. Might be interesting to see what they'd say about it. I don't understand why so many people who ship one hate the other ship; they're not in competition or anything. I just don't see the appeal. Batshit Rumbelle shippers get up my nose even more than batshit SQ stans, because I get really bad contact embarrassment from some of the stuff they do. (Fits about that letter from the Facebook game, fits about breaking the damn cup, fits about Lacey--seriously guys, at least our ship is canon. Can you stop whinging every time they don't get to be lovey-dovey cute?)
