Here's the thing, Anonymous. I know I said leave the psycholanalysis to the professionals, but here's a better educated guess: people in FANDOM are lonely, that much is evident when reading their comments on various secrets here. Fuck, I can personally attest to coming here (my only serious fandom outlet) when I'm bored and lonely myself.

But to single out slash? Is a stupid generalization to the exclusion of many. People seek fandom and frequently ship, but this loneliness is not limited to slash by any means nor is slash the direct result.

Again, fandom.

This is why this a secret. Because it's an innocent speculation, but everyone thinks that I'm assuming that everyone in fandom is lonely or that you can only ever like slash because you are lonely. I don't think people in fandom are any more lonely than people outside of it. And yeah, you can like the dynamics between characters, but it's still an escapism fantasy. Why not just read genfic instead of pairings?

And by "any sort of slash" I meant slash, femmeslash and het as well.

Sometimes characters don't have to be in love. Or fucking. Or anything like that. But it pops up constantly within fandom.
