The disconnect between people who care about Halo lore and average Halo players alternately amuses and baffles me. I haven't played the series myself, but there's this minority who've gotten really, really invested in what's apparently a surprisingly complex story, and then there are all these people who're just in it to shoot things. It seems like what might have happened if Diablo had actually had as good of a plot as its writers seemed to think it had.

IMO Halo lore sounds fascinating, and I've barely gotten to it. I only have Halo 4, but I'd totally buy the previous games for the story/background/lore.

Who doesn't believe you?! Uh, I cried through the entire last playable section plus the cutscene, and my mom (who doesn't know jack shit about the storyline) walked in during the end cutscene once and started crying just from Cortana's voice-over.

These games have some pretty rich lore and world-building if you care to explore them, and the books and comics and such are actually quite compelling. Plus, imo Reach was one of the better Halo campaigns; the storytelling was excellent, the characters were great, the gameplay was fun as hell, and yes, it was pretty damn poignant.

Anyway, I guess what I'm saying is just because some people think Halo is mindless killing that shouldn't bring you down or make you afraid to voice your opinion.

I agree OP. Don't let anyone ruin that feeling/thought process.

[Picture is a full-head dark gray helmet with a yellow visor lying on the grass on a field. There is a crashed aircraft on the distance, and far on the horizon, a mountain that seems to have been sliced in the middle.]

Out of all the Role Playing Games and First Person Shooters I've ever played, none made me cry as hard as the ending of Halo Rich did. I consider it one of the best examples of storytelling in a game.

Secret because... it's a Halo game. It feels embarrassing to talk about. No one believes me, and even if they do, they don't want to try.

ok op, i've made a mental note to get this game should opportunity arise

Scrolling down I saw the mountaintop first, and immediately thought "Journey Secret! SWEET!"

Tell me I'm not alone, folks?

I love the lore too OP - when all the fuss about Halo 3 was all over the internet, I checked out the wiki and was blown away at the backstory. It's really neat and inventive, and could be amazing if they were really willing to go places with it.

No joke, I think the story is good enough to warrant a TV series, and I'd watch the shit out of it.

And hey, one of my friends cried at the end of Halo 4 so you're hardly alone on that front.

Alas, it is an Xbox exclusive, and will be forever unknown to me. I really only played MP back in the day with the first two and in that respect it was so utterly outclassed by the FPS games that came after that I have trouble going back to it.

Killzone's got surprisingly rich lore itself, but it sure as shit doesn't come up much in the story campaign. That said I've got a buddy who reads all the Halo novels, so I believe you when you say there's something there.

No shame, OP, I damn near cried myself. Bungie has been doing this to me since Marathon 2 and "Begging For Mercy Makes Me Angry!", and that doesn't even have voice acting. Reach was fantastic and heartbreaking.
