I think the show suffered from weak plots when it came to Merlin not discussing his magic. If he hadn't held so much back from Arthur, Arthur would have made a better king and have fought for magic users. The writers just liked their angst and Merlin suffered for it.

Pretty much, yea. I did like the final episode (I'm realize I'm one of the few, lol) but it was fucking ridiculous how long they held Merlin's secret. It would've been great if the series showed Arthur's reaction and then explored how he changed as a person, ruler, and friend.

It would have been better if Merlin had made his bit "I have magic" speech and Arthur had went "I know". And then they could have really gotten to the heart of Merlin's motivations.

That would've worked too, and been neat and clever. Unfortunately there's no way the writers would've made Arthur that perceptive.

They were just too in love with their gimmick.

You'll get no argument from me there.

I liked it too. The sap in me loves Merlin waiting hundreds of years for Arthur to reincarnate. I cried, but was like "the fic from this shall be glorious."

It becomes less Romantic when you realise Arthur is going to be a kid and Merlin is Catweazle though. Yeeuch, that is going to be a relationship that is full or problematicals.

Shhhh. You know Merlin is going to find a way to be his hot young self again, and he won't hit on young Arthur. He'll wait. It's romantic. Shhhhhh.

The sap in me liked it too, but then again I do have a thing for happy endings.

As for the kid thing an anon mentioned...couldn't Arthur technically already have been reincarnated and be of age? Merlin must've been doing something with his time, I don't know if he would magically know when it happens.

I think Merlin could stumble upon Arthur at any age. He probably would find him across the years, reincarnated in different stages in his life. It's kinda sad. He's always waiting for Arthur.

Of course, he might have a homing beacon and be able to find Arthur right away, but would keep his distance until he was older.

That would make sense! I imagine it would be odd seeing Arthur as a child, so he would probably keep tabs on him but not stick around.
