Celtic culture! Bagpipes! Pretty clothes!

(Anonymous) 2013-08-03 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
The Interceltic Festival in Lorient has kicked off! The Great Parade will be tomorrow. What is it? Basically, a group representing each celtic nation (as the linguo goes) parades around the city of Lorient in Brittany, France. Every group is composed either of dancers or musicians, sometimes both, in traditional clothing. The all-musicians groups are called "bagad", "bagadou" in plural form.

Interceltic means exactly what it looks like. Celts from all around the world, including Spain (Galicia and Asturies), Canada (Acadia, Cape Breton) etc etc.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LhdeRanwC0M - last year's parade. Sadly there are two journalists who comment the whole thing in French, so if you don't understand it it can be a bit grating.

Here's a shorter one, with no background commentary: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SoVpDgDuVjY

This is the concert that typically closes the festival - every participant playing music and dancing on stage. Miraculously, even though this is the version shown on TV, there barely seems to be any commentary. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNS4doFnR6M

I should mention that most groups are composed of volunteers only! And that traditional clothes from Brittany are famous for lace and lace bonnets in particular.

Enjoy, if you like that sort of thing!

aw man thanks for reminding me. I wanted to watch the parade on TV, but had already forgotten all about it
